It is noted in the Global Cruise Industry Report of 2016 by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)
that the global passenger volume of cruises could increase by 24 million, wherein Asia may become the
world’s fifth largest cruise market with a 9.2% share. At the same time, Asian passenger volume may
increase to 11 million by 2030 with a forecasted market share of 30%. With constant, active demand, the
Taiwanese market proves itself as an important geographical location with much potential anticipated by
the tourism industry.

Deputy Director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau, Wayne Liu, has expressed pride in the fact that Taiwan is growing
more and more prosperous in the Asia-Pacific cruise market; however, we must consider how to bolster
operations in order to face such a huge market. The most important factor in developing the cruise industry is
participating in regional cooperation efforts, rather than working independently. Moreover, after surveying several
key global locations such as the Caribbeans, the Mediterranean, etc, we found that the integration efforts of
ports among different regions should be strengthened, so that we can implement multi-stop tours for one cruise
package. Liu also believes that the selection of routes and commodities can be more diversified through regional
cooperation, and that market demand would increase greatly as a result. Therefore, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau
has been collaborating with Hong Kong since 2014, first in the Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC). Then, Xiamen,
Hainan Island, Philippines, etc. have all subsequently joined the ACC, thereby gradually increasing the scope of
its effect.
